Prahlad Kakkar, a leading ad film director in India, a ‘Man of many hats’, a Restaurateur and a Cigar Manufacturer known for the famous Pepsi TV commercial with bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan & Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar who is also the founder-director of Genesis Film Production, one of India’s leading production houses, established in 1977 is now all set to turn film director by producing full-length films.
An avid scuba diver, Prahlad has set up ‘Lacadives‘, a scuba-diving school, for the scuba enthusiasts along with his wife Mitali Kakar at Kadmat Island, in association with the Govt. of Lakshadweep.
This Ad-guru will now be seen trying his expertise of almost thirty years in advertising industry over his first Hindi film called ‘Mere Mehboob’ that will have almost all the emotions from sex, violence and everything that make a typical Bollywood potboiler.
Mere Mehboob is a spoof on the political situation that will feature the tension between India and Pakistan where the story is about a bunch of ISI agents who cannot go back to Pakistan. As the agents don’t have any other option they carry terrorist activities in India.
Well it is expected that prahlad will give a comic touch to the events that follow in the film with his witty sense and sarcasm of course. The film is also believed to take up issues like the disinvestment of Air India and Indian Airlines where the script itself took almost two years to be brought on paper that will take time to hit the floors where the cast hasn’t been finalized yet.
Prahlad also has some short films like ‘Bitter Rain‘ and ‘Bali‘ to his credit. Besides this, he is known for the love of food, has a full-fledged kitchen in his studio and owns a restaurant, ‘Sarson da saag‘ in Mumbai.
In 1994, he co-founded Reefwatch Marine Conservation, an NGO involved in Marine conservation and awareness, education, scientific research and data collection.
Prahlad’s wife Mitali Dutt is also an ad maker and owner of Offspring and Offshoot, production companies. The cute and page 3 couple is blessed with two sons Arnav, Varun and a daughter, Anajinsama.
Born in Mumbai, Prahlad’s father was a colonel in Pakistan and mother half Burmese and half Marathi, who settled in Gurgaon. Prahlad took training to be a colonel from Sainik School, Kunjpura, Karnal and graduated with Economics (Honors) from Fergusson College, Pune only to find solace in his all time passion- ‘Advertising‘. He joined avertising in 1971, as an Accounts Executive in ASP, Delhi, but after a year was transferred to its Bombay office. In 1972 itself, he joined renowned feature director, Shyam Benegal, his batchmate, as an Asst. Director on timeless films like ‘Ankur’, ‘Manthan’, and ‘Bhumika’.
After that he founded Genesis Film Productions in 1977 along with Manjit Kakar and Ravi Uppor. Though the journey began with tough times, Genesis achieved a top-grade status as advertisement film making agency and Kakkar received fame for his Kamasutra ads.
