We’re extremely close to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them being exactly one year away, and we’re finally starting to get a few nuggets from the production. Now, a couple new images are out, and I suspect fans will appreciate the look of the setting, and especially Eddie Redmayne.
The film has a little something for everyone, and I really mean everyone. Whether you’re a huge fan of the franchise, or a jaded cynic who can’t stand another money grab, it’s almost like this production was made for you.
Based on a sort of Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures from the Harry Potter world, itself a shameless money grab, this one also has J. K. Rowling as screenwriter, and follows, in some sense, the work behind the book in question. Redmayne plays Newt Scamander, and is set in ’20s New York. That already makes for a very different setting, one that is slightly difficult to predict in terms of audience response, and the plot revolves around something more like the “routine” lives of wizards, also a divergence.
David Yates will again direct the franchise, because if it ain’t broke (by way of making tons of cash), don’t fix it.
However the film turns out, this could truly change the entire world of the franchise. That’s true simply as a facet of how Rowling’s abilities are judged, and how far afield the franchise may ultimately move… some day.
The film is scheduled for release November 18th, 2016.
