The one-time husband of pop star Katy Perry and occasional comedic actor, Russell Brand has been on a mission. Over the past few years, he’s taken to social media and the streets (literally) to raise awareness on key economic, political, and social issues. While his activities have been in the spotlight mostly in the UK, worldwide audiences are about to get a healthy dose of Russell Brand, the activist.
The Emperor’s New Clothes is a documentary film chronicling Brand going after big banks and big bankers in the UK. The film tackles the complex and controversial question of wealth inequality … an important social issue in the United States as well as the UK. American audiences who only know Brand from such light hearted comedies as Get Him to the Greek (2010) and Arthur (2011) might be surprised to him in a different light.
Brand has been preaching on this issue for a few years now speaking his views through his own Youtube program (The Trews) until recently going on hiatus. A trailer for The Emperor’s New Clothes shows Brand attempting the ambush-style filmmaking that Michael Moore has perfected, as well as Brand talking directly to the audience much like he did on his own defunct program.
How will American audiences take to this modern tale from the land across the pond? There might be more interest than we think given the current election cycle. Of course, that assumes Brand can pull audiences away from that little sci-fi film coming out in mid-December.
The Emperor’s New Clothes has a limited US theatrical release from IFC Films on December 16, 2016.
