With so much action by the environmentalists these days, the Hollywood’s legendary landmark sign too has now been sheltered with panels that read- ‘Save the Peak’. It was an action taken by a conservation group wherein the motive is to actually protect the bordering land from getting urbanized into lavish residences. Thus, it is believed that this is nothing but a part of the group’s fund-raising drive.

The conservation group is basically a San Francisco-based Trust for Public Land which was given authorization to cover up the iconic sign with red lettering until next Tuesday. Come what may, it is good to see that the tourist attraction mark will get protection in one way.

“We want to raise the visibility of it, so people will support our campaign to save the peak, to save the land,” Trust for Public Land spokesman Tim Ahern said at a ceremony.

The landmark sign on Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills has always been a centre of attraction to millions of people who visit the city for the love of films and simply to get a glimpse of the celebrities.

  • Nysa says:

Ahem!! I think this attempt is somewhat paradoxical. Reports say that the Hollywood sign, which consists of nine 15-metre-high letters, was erected in 1923 as an advertisement for a suburban housing development called ‘Hollywoodland’. Further, in 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce removed the ‘land’ part of the sign. :P :)

  • Jay says:

You are correct Nysa. One more thing I would like to add here is that the letters were even altered for time being in 1992, to endorse the film ‘Cool World’.

  • Kads says:

I have heard that the same trust has raised approximately half the $12.5 million US required to purchase the Cahuenga Peak property which lies to the west of the sign from its Chicago-based owners.

  • Urvashi says:

I think they had a plan to turn the 138 acres of mountain track into extravagant homes.

  • Kjo says:

I simply love L.A. It has always been a dream to have you own home over there. There’s so much to see and do…and all of it is cool things.

  • imsrk says:

I think it in fact does not matter what they do with the sign. Moreover, if you have been there, you know the smog is so thick, you can’t see it anyhow. So what’s the big deal man..

  • Nysa says:

It feels good to see that Steven Spielberg & Tom Hanks has come together to protect the famous landmark sign- ‘HOLLYWOOD’!!
