A comedy entry by Peter Bilingsley, Couples Retreat is something based upon an idea of Vaughan’s. The movie follows the storyline that every marriage has to be worked upon, although they seem to be looking perfect on the surface. Though not so good at its humor, the movie has tried to answer a simple question as to why marriages rock with its storyline of the different couples who flee off into marriage therapy island when divorce impends upon the married life of their friends.

The movie sets off with four couples, who go on a vacation that results into some marriage deeds, at the behest of one of them who are planning for a divorce. All of them enter into Eden, a luxury resort, only to find out that all’s not brawny inside their own Inn. Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) plan up a vacation to the couple’s therapy retreat, in an attempt to save their own marriage. Their friends, Joey ((Jon Favreau) and Lucy (Kristen Davis), Dave (Vince Vaughn) and Ronnie (Malin Akerman) and recently divorced Shane (Faizon Love) and his girlfriend Trudy (Kali Hawk) join along reluctantly. After the first therapy session, the couples find out that they have got problems in their relationships even though the relationship seems to be fine and the others decide to join Jason and Cynthia.

They bear Marcel’s (Jean Reno) odd methods and on the fourth night Trudy runs off to the east side of Eden, meant for singles and encouraged by Joey the other seven decide to find her out. Followed with an argument the group splits up into men and women who continue with their journey, wherein, the women meet up Salvadore, who takes them to the Eden East and the Men are rapped inside Sctanley’s hut. Dave beats Sctanley in a Guitar Hero Duel and sends him to Eden east. On this side, Joey sees Lucy with Salvadore and bangs him out. Towards the end, Jason and Cynthia share drinks and confess out their problems. Shane moves back to his ex-wife, who admits that she loves him. And later, all the couples come back to Eden West and Marcel, seeing them happy unbounds them from the therapy.

The only problem with the movie is that there is very little fun and too much talk. Also, the humor is not much appealing and the long silence makes it unfunny.

I guess, somewhere in all of this, there was enough space for a real good comedy, but this movie just couldn’t do it. A big disappointment!!

  • Pammy says:

I think the script for this comedy was somewhat half-baked. May be that’s why it did not appear funny at all, as it projected itself before its release..

  • Sonia says:

I didn’t like the film at all..
