Homebound Sean Penn has shocked the wits out of two studios, from whose projects he has withdrawn his name, quoting personal problems. Penn who has recently won the Best Actor award at the Academy Awards for ‘Milk’ has left many questions unanswered with this reasoning. It’s not known how long he will be in hibernation but sources close to him have said up to a year.

The projects, MGM’s “The Three Stooges” and Universal and Imagine’s crime thriller “Cartel” are hi-profile productions with “The Three Stooges” bound to suffer the most.

“The Three Stooges” has been through tough times already with Peter and Bobby Farrelly trying to get the camera rolling for over half a decade. They had almost had weaved a casting magic by signing Penn as Larry, Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe. But now with Penn’s decision, it waits to be seen if MGM and Farrelly’s will convince Penn to come back or hunt for a new actor for the role of Larry. If production doesn’t start as planned the producers could even lose out on Carrey and Toro due to busy schedules.
On the other hand, “Cartel” has been re-casted by Universal and Imagine, due to absence of Penn. Cartel is the story of a man who wants to protect his son after his wife is murdered by Mexican drug cartels.

Penn has completed shooting his part for both the films of River Road Entertainment productions; Doug Liman’s “Fair Game” and Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” which co-stars Brad Pitt.

A two-time Academy Award winner for the roles in ‘Mystic River’ and ‘Milk’, Sean Penn seems to have been facing the testing times.
Well, he is a thorough professional and no doubt will soon come out of this phase…
